Choosing to freelance can feel like a radical career move for many professionals. Some consider it their dream job and are determined to follow through, regardless of whether they will ever make as much as they do in some corporate office. Others feel completely turned off by the idea, assuming that freelancing is stressful, demanding, and full of dangerous pitfalls.
In truth, the reality of the freelance lifestyle lies somewhere in between those two extremes. There are many advantages and benefits to the freelance life that can be highly appealing to those looking for a more flexible and fulfilling professional experience.
For many, the greatest benefit of freelancing is that it gives you control over your work and your schedule. You decide how long you want to work each week, which clients to work with, and which projects to accept. This allows you to create a work- life balance that works best for your personal and professional goals.
Additionally, most freelancers find themselves learning more than they anticipate as they take on new assignments and work with different clients. Having the opportunity to work on diverse projects can help you become a well-rounded designer, writer, or developer and grow your skillset in ways that are beneficial to your future employment.
Another perk to freelancing is that you get to set your own rates. While this can be a great way to make sure you are paid fairly for your work, it can also be challenging to maintain a balanced workload. In addition, setting rates that are too high could result in you turning away business or losing out on potential projects to competitors with lower rates.
It is a delicate balance that is unique to each individual freelancer and must be constantly evaluated as you gain experience and establish a reputation in the industry.
For many people, the freedom of working freelance provides a huge relief from the stress and boredom that often come with traditional work. It is also a great way to sidestep the often draining realm of office politics that can stifle productivity and lead to feelings of burnout.
Finally, for some, the biggest perk to freelancing is that it allows them to spend more time with family and friends and avoid the long commutes and rigid work schedules that are common in most full-time positions.
Every freelancer’s path to success looks a little bit different, but the majority of successful ones have laid a foundation for their careers over the course of a few years by steadily building up a portfolio of work and establishing a positive reputation in their industry.
Some writers or designers may even skip full-time employment altogether and jump straight into freelancing, but this is more rare and typically only done by those who have a strong network of colleagues they can turn to for support when needed.
For the rest, freelancing is often a gradual transition that begins with taking on small jobs or working freelance on a part-time basis to test out the profession before committing to it full-time.
