The sales funnel is the structure that defines your business’s process for converting leads into prospects and then into paying customers. It is a useful framework through which to view your marketing and sales efforts, as well as to identify areas for improvement.
Whether you sell a physical product, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution or a consulting-type service, your sales funnel can be designed to reflect the unique challenges and opportunities of your business model. The goal is to achieve a high win rate by leveraging your sales and marketing activities to drive qualified leads through your sales pipeline.
For most businesses, the first step in a sales funnel is making prospective customers aware of your brand, whether through online advertising, search engine optimization (SEO), social media, email or cold calling. Once your target audience has reached the awareness stage, they move into the interest phase by engaging with your content and asking general questions about what your business offers.
Once your prospect has moved into the desire stage, they are ready to take action and may request a demonstration or quote. The final stage in a sales funnel is the purchase stage, when your prospects actually buy your product or service and begin using it. Depending on your business model, the sales funnel may include additional steps like a repurchase or renewal cycle.
To optimize your sales funnel, set clear behavioral criteria for moving leads into the next stages and keep tabs on the progress of your prospective buyers. This can be done by tracking metrics like entry rates, follow-ups, flow rate and win rates. By actively monitoring these metrics, you can pinch or expand the funnel in relevant places to arrive at a shape that maximises conversion at each stage.
Getting granular with your sales funnel data requires the right tools. Invest in a CRM that provides real-time data updates and automation, so you can focus your team on nurturing prospects and closing deals.
